Pets of Milton-Freewater, Inc. is dedicated to reducing pet overpopulation primarily through spay/neuter and education. We also work to find homes for the stray cats and kittens tamed from feral cats from our very active Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for feral and barn cats.

As funds allow, we provide spay/neuter assistance for feral (wild) cats.

We keep up on what low-cost spay/neuter opportunities are available in the area and can advise those who need financial assistance or low-cost spay/neuter for their cats or dogs what is the best way of getting help or where they can get the least expensive services.

When there is room in our shelter, we take in tamable kittens and/or stray cats from our trap-neuter-return program to adopt out.

We adopt out cats at periodical Petco adoption events and onsite at our cat shelter, Cats Galore at (509) 386-9609.

2008 was an eventful year for Pets of Milton-Freewater. Pets of MF was awarded $57,000 in grants in 2008 (See News & Events page for more details).
We completed Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) work in Weston, OR (sterilizing 161 cats) helped sister group Pet Utopia in Pendleton, OR start their TNR program, continued spay/neuter work in Milton-Freewater and Athena, OR (10 cats) and started new TNR projects on the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indians reservation (153 cats, 22 dogs in 2008) and Helix (15 cats in 2008), Oregon.
We also started a TNR project for the City of Walla Walla, WA (72 cats in 2008) as a participant in the Cat Management Coalition, comprised of City of Walla Walla Animal Control, Blue Mountain Humane Society and SWAT all from Walla Walla, and Pets of Milton-Freewater, Inc.

Cat adoptions were significantly down in 2008 compared with 2007, with 155 cats adopted out in 2008 (273 in 2007).

Over 60 low-income pet owners were assisted with spay/neuter assistance vouchers. Over 600 animals were spayed/neutered through Pets of Milton-Freewater in 2008, the majority of these animals being feral cats.

The Cats Meow Thrift Store was closed at the end of 2008. Insufficent volunteers resulted in narrowing the hours the store was open, the bad economy reduced profits, and limited overall store profits were not considered sufficient for the volunteer time invested. These factors prompted the Board to search for different and more effective ways to fundraise.
